Iran says Oman shipping deal is near final as Hormuz dispute continues

Tehran says a maritime arrangement is close, but reopening the strategic waterway still depends on unresolved demands involving Washington.

Iran said on Sunday that a maritime agreement being negotiated with Oman over shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz had reached its final stages. The statement offered a possible route toward easing disruption in one of the world's most important energy corridors, but it did not amount to an immediate reopening.

Tehran said the United States would still need to meet a series of conditions, including sanctions relief and compensation connected to military attacks. Iranian officials also said direct talks with Washington were not taking place and that messages were moving through intermediaries.

The dispute matters far beyond the Gulf. The strait carries a major share of global oil and gas exports, so any durable arrangement would be closely watched by shipping companies, energy markets and governments across Asia and Europe.
