In a sweeping and determined anti-narcotics campaign, Sharjah Police seized over 1,240 kilograms of illegal drugs—valued at more than Dh279 million—and arrested 680 individuals involved in drug trafficking and promotion during 2024. The announcement was made during a special forum held at Sharjah Police Headquarters on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse.
The campaign, themed “An Aware Family, a Safe Society,” not only reflects the emirate’s steadfast commitment to fighting drugs but also serves as a call to action for families and communities to play their part in prevention.
Record Seizures and Arrests
Brigadier Majid Sultan Al Asam, Director of the Anti-Narcotics Department, revealed that Sharjah Police achieved a 91.2% success rate in anti-drug operations in 2024, according to a field study by the Department of Statistics and Community Development in Sharjah.
Among the numerous operations launched during the year, two major busts s
tood out:
- Operation Destructive Stone
- Operation A4
These operations dismantled drug distribution cells operating across borders. In early 2025, Sharjah Police conducted a major international sting dubbed “Bottom of Darkness,” which led to the seizure of nearly 3.5 million illegal pills.
“These figures underscore our firm commitment to dismantling drug networks, wherever they operate,” Brigadier Al Asam said.
War on Digital Drug Networks
In a powerful blow to online drug trade, Sharjah Police shut down 680 social media accounts promoting or facilitating drug sales during 2024. These accounts were operating under false identities, targeting users—especially vulnerable youth—through messaging apps and social platforms.
“Our biggest challenge today is digital,” said Brigadier Al Asam. “Drug dealers are no longer lurking in dark alleys. They’re on your phone screens, sending private messages with links, offers, and images. We need families to remain alert and proactive.”
He urged citizens to report any suspicious digital activity through the Sharjah Police hotline 8004654.
Strategic Forum Brings Experts Together
The awareness forum was attended by top law enforcement officials, judiciary figures, and strategic partners, including:
- Major General Abdullah bin Amer, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police
- Mohammed Ibrahim Al Raisi, Director of Ports and Border Points Affairs
- Shams Al Shamsi, Director of the Narcotics Prosecution
- Judge Dr. Abdullah Salem Al Naqbi, of the Sharjah Judiciary Department
- Brigadier Majid Sultan Al Asam, Director of the Anti-Narcotics Department
Moderated by media figure Mohammed Al Manna’ai, the forum featured a panel discussion focused on integrated approaches to combating drug crimes, highlighting the importance of prevention, rehabilitation, and legal enforcement.
A Collective Responsibility
Brigadier Al Asam stressed that drug prevention begins at home: “Combating drugs isn’t just a police responsibility—it starts at home. Families, schools, and communities must work hand in hand to raise awareness and shield youth from this growing danger.”
The slogan “An Aware Family, a Safe Society” isn’t just branding—it’s policy. Sharjah Police’s multifaceted approach combines intelligence operations, digital surveillance, public education, and international cooperation to fight narcotics at every level.
Looking Ahead
With the increasing complexity of drug trafficking operations—especially those using digital platforms and cross-border routes—Sharjah Police is expected to expand its technological capabilities and invest further in community outreach.
As Sharjah reinforces its role as a national leader in anti-narcotics operations, it sends a clear message: those who attempt to exploit technology, families, or young minds for criminal gain will face the full force of the law.
The fight continues—but the results of 2024 prove one thing: Sharjah is not backing down.
