The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has issued a strong statement denouncing a brutal attack on a monastery in Myanmar’s Sagaing region, which resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 23 civilians, including four children.

According to witnesses, the deadly assault targeted the Lintalu village monastery, a shelter for nearly 200 internally displaced persons fleeing intense conflict between Myanmar’s military forces and pro-democracy resistance groups.

UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement

In an official statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) expressed:

“It’s a strong condemnation of these criminal and inhumane acts, which aim to destabilize peace and security in the region.”

The ministry extended heartfelt condolences and deep sympathy to the families of the victims and the friendly people of Myanmar, expressing solidarity in the face of this tragedy.

The Monastery Was Housing Displaced Civilians

Eyewitnesses report that the monastery in Lintalu was acting as a safe haven for over 200 civilians, including many women and children, who had been forced to flee their homes due to nearby clashes. The attack has left the international community shocked, especially due to the targeting of a religious sanctuary sheltering vulnerable individuals.

Global Implications and UAE’s Diplomatic Stance

This condemnation aligns with the UAE’s consistent stance on:

  • Respecting international humanitarian law

  • Protecting civilians during conflict

  • Promoting global peace, security, and religious sanctity

The UAE continues to call for dialogue, stability, and the protection of civilians, especially in volatile regions experiencing internal conflict.

 A Call for International Accountability

The UAE joins other nations and humanitarian organizations urging for:

  • Immediate investigation into the attack

  • Humanitarian assistance for the survivors

  • Greater protection for religious sites and displaced persons
